Understanding Changes in Your Skin
Facial aging is a gradual process. Over time, skin may become thinner, drier, and less elastic. Fine lines, changes in texture, and shifts in facial contours can become more noticeable.
These changes are natural. Understanding what contributes to them can help you choose care that fits your goals and expectations.
Why Does Skin Change With Age?
Natural aging affects the structures that keep skin firm and resilient. Sun exposure can accelerate visible changes, including wrinkles, uneven pigmentation, and loss of elasticity.
Repeated facial expressions, smoking, and environmental exposure can also contribute. Facial aging involves more than the skin alone, so different concerns may require different approaches.
Common Concerns
You may notice:
Fine lines around the eyes, mouth, or forehead
Skin that feels drier or less supple
Changes in firmness or facial contours
Uneven tone or texture
Expression lines that remain visible at rest
Identifying what concerns you most helps make treatment discussions more specific and useful.
How Facial Acupuncture May Help
Cosmetic acupuncture uses fine needles at selected points on the face and, depending on the treatment plan, other areas of the body.
Small studies have explored improvements in facial elasticity and skin appearance. One pilot study reported encouraging changes after a series of treatments, but it had no comparison group. Larger, well-controlled studies are needed to establish how much improvement to expect and how long benefits may last.
Setting Realistic Expectations
Facial acupuncture may appeal to people looking for a gradual, minimally invasive approach to cosmetic care. Any visible changes may be subtle, and results vary.
It should not be expected to replace lost facial volume, remove excess skin, or reproduce the effects of injectable treatments or surgery. A consultation can help clarify whether your specific concern is appropriate for acupuncture or would benefit from a dermatologist’s assessment.
What to Expect at Your Appointment
Your appointment begins with a discussion of your skin concerns, health history, medications, and previous cosmetic treatments.
Dr. Michiko considers your comfort and goals when planning care. Please mention recent Botox, fillers, laser treatments, or facial surgery so that timing and treatment areas can be discussed appropriately.
Temporary bruising can occur, including on visible areas of the face. Allow time before important events, and discuss any tendency to bruise or medications that affect bleeding.
Begin With Your Goals
